Tips to Remember

  • Here are a few tips to remember about high school graduation: 
     
    • Arrive early and give yourself plenty of time. Traffic congestion near the school is likely.
    • To ensure safety, metal detection screenings will take place at all schools. Be prepared to stand in line.
    • Additional security personnel will be assigned to each school.
    • In the event of inclement weather, outdoor ceremonies will be held indoors and require a ticket for admission.
    • Graduation is a formal ceremony. Please refrain from inappropriate cheering and boisterous applause as the students receive diplomas.

Superintendent's Message

  • This is the time for the Class of 2017 to shine

    Superintendent W. Jeffrey Booker    Saturday morning, more than 2,200 seniors in èAVƵ will walk across the stage and take a big step into the future. High school graduation is a milestone in life that signifies a student’s transition from childhood to adulthood and leads to many new opportunities.
       The future is bright for the Class of 2017. Our graduates are embarking on new paths that include going to college, serving our country in the military, and joining the workforce. There is no question that our graduates are prepared for all that tomorrow brings.
       We are extremely proud of our seniors. They have earned recognition for excellence in academics, athletics, fine arts, extracurricular activities, and community service. Their achievements are significant because of their ambition to succeed and go beyond expectations.
       Our current scholarship total for the Class of 2017 exceeds $45 million, and our seniors have earned scholarships to attend the most prestigious universities across the state and country. We even have students who were awarded full-tuition scholarships to attend Brown and Princeton, two Ivy League schools. Our students are planning to study biology, engineering, education, nursing, art and design, music, and other subjects in hopes of becoming the next generation of scientists, architects, teachers, health care professionals, artists, and the list goes on.
       In addition to scholarships, the honors and awards presented to the Class of 2017 are numerous and impressive. We have champions in science and technology, business and finance, sports (football, cheerleading, and track and field), drama, visual art and writing, and other areas.
       To the Class of 2017: Wherever you go and whatever you do, it is our sincere hope that you continue to experience the joy found in learning. Learning does not end with high school graduation; actually, it is just beginning. Your educational journey from kindergarten to high school graduation has prepared you for what’s ahead, but there is so much more for you to discover and understand.
       Learning is a lifelong process and that is why it is important for all graduates to continue to read, ask questions, seek information, pursue knowledge, and explore topics of interest. Continue to develop your skills, your work habits, your sense of ethics and values, and your desire to always learn and grow. The world is changing far too fast for you to take a break from learning.
       The Board of Education joins me in honoring and commending our graduates and extending our best wishes. For each graduate, we hope you experience a life filled with happiness and success, and we encourage you to embrace every opportunity to dream more, care more, do more, and be more in life. Congratulations, Class of 2017 – this is your time to shine!

Outstanding Achievements

  • Here is a look at a few of our seniors in the Class of 2017 and their outstanding achievements.

    Chris Turner (Bessemer City) earned a QuestBridge full scholarship valued at more than $270,000 to attend Brown University.

    Cammie Tarte (East èAVƵ) won a Silver Key national award in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program for her sculpture titled “Meraki.”

    Delante Sykes (Ashbrook) earned a full scholarship from the University of North Dakota to participate in track and field.

    Chloe Kaylor (Stuart W. Cramer) was a winner in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program and had her artwork chosen for placement on a billboard.

    Maren East (Forestview) received the Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship, a four-year award valued at $80,000.

    Sarah Eagan (Highland) and Mattie Lee (Stuart W. Cramer) were winners of the Best and Brightest scholarships.

    Demarquis Logan (Hunter Huss) received the Paul Fuller Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding senior who has been a part of the èAVƵ mentoring program.
     
    Alexis Martinez Arroyo (North èAVƵ) was chosen to participate in the Carolina Covenant Scholars program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
     
    Cameron Hall (Bessemer City) signed a letter of intent to play golf at Pfeiffer University.

    Lito Mantecon (Ashbrook) was one of 10 outstanding student-athletes honored as a Carolina Panthers Community Captain.

    Jerme Leeper and Maya Sadler (South Point) are recipients of the James S. Miller Scholarship, which is named for the late èAVƵ County principal, teacher, and pastor.

    Bayleigh Henley (Cherryville) received the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Performance of the Week Award for her efforts on the school’s volleyball team.

    Madison Knowles (èAVƵ Early College) was elected to serve as president of the Student Government Association at èAVƵ College.

    Summer Glisson (Forestview) won the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which is presented by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

    Rebecca Gomez (Highland) received the James Buie Scholarship, which provides full tuition for her to study criminal justice at Belmont Abbey College.

    Michaela Taylor (South Point) will have her original poem, “Swan Lake,” published in the American High School Poets anthology.
